Q&A: Does Weight Loss = Strength Loss?

My son, Carson Lee Kinnick 3 1/2 years old, and I after Daddy took 3rd place at the 2012 Reebok Crossfit Games SoCal Regionals.

Below is a question posed by one of my blog followers in regards to losing weight and losing strength.  Do they in fact go hand in hand?  Do they have to?  Is there a way to keep this from happening?  If so, is it worth it?  Read below and see what I have to say.

Hey Jeremy, Congrats on making it to the Games. I admire your hard work and dedication to the sport but most importantly I admire your dedication to your family and your stronghold faith in Jesus Christ. My question is how you handle the weight loss and in regards to strenght? What i mean is…i’ve lost weight and feel like my strenght is lost with it. How do u handle that? Hope to hear soon and would like to wod with you one day. Thanks and God bless.”

Rambles… Thanks for the comment and more importantly thank you for the kind words and support.

Thats a great question. I think a lot of it has to do with my programming. As you may know Brian Mackenzie programs everything I do. I work a lot on explosiveness and I lift heavy on a regular basis and also did so as I was dropping weight. I have gotten a bit stronger on some movements but more importantly I have gained overall strength endurance. Meaning I can move heavy weight for high reps really well. I think that is far more important than have a super heavy 1 rep max.

Have you or did you lift much while losing weight? Also, how did you lose weight? I follow the Zone balance and eat unprocessed foods mainly organic and grass fed/free range, as much as I can afford at least. I have seen a lot of people lose strength when not eating enough Carbs from fruits and veggies. I also write a lot of meal plans for crossfitters throughout the community as well as at my box and when people are lifting and fueling properly I have seen a lot of strength gains with weight loss. So I guess it just depends on what you are doing. Hope that helps. If you want me to elaborate on any of the points or you have more questions, please let me know. Thanks again for the comment.

2012 Reebok Crossfit Games SoCal Regional Behind the Scenes Video

Here is a cool video by my great buddy, Jordan Gravatt of Crossfit by Overload, right after taking 2nd place on workout #4 at the SoCal Regional.  I like this video for many reasons.  This was a huge boost for me mentally and in the rankings.  So much of what we do in Crossfit is psychological/mental.  And I could see it in my eyes that there was no way I was going home without a Top 3 spot.

This was such a different year for me for some many reasons but especially in regards to my Regional Prep.  A couple weeks before the Event I did a run through of the weekend and with all of the workouts and treated it like it was Regionals weekend.  I hadn’t practiced the movements and I didnt test out the workouts at all before.  I did my run through and was satisfied with my first attempts.  I learned a lot about how I would go faster, strategy, etc.  But that was it.  I did not do the workouts anymore.  I continued to train for the Games.  Going in to Regionals I knew I would crush my previous times and compared to the previous Regionals I had some confidence in my ability to stay at the top.  The fact that I did not train for the Regional workouts yet did as well as I did gives me a HUGE mental edge as we prep and get ready for the Games.  Last year I trained for almost 2 months prepping myself on the exact Regional workouts.  Such a difference a year makes, right?  Looking forward to the Games I know I will be ready.  And I know I will leave my mark at the Home Depot Center in July.  Keep your eyes open or you might miss it!  Time to Spread that BUTTER!

Here we go again.  I have had more requests for me to bring this back.  A lot of things have changed this past year for me.  From working exclusively with Brian Mackenzie to dropping 203# to 185# from the end of January to March.  I qualified for Regionals and am heading back to the Crossfit Games for the 4th time!  I am currently writing meal plans and programming for Crossfitters across the globe in an effort to help others the way I have been helped with Crossfit and proper nutrition.  So, if you have a question I will do my best to answer it.  Thanks again for supporting me and checking out my website.  Some very cool things are coming soon.  More details and these things begin to unfold.

“Hope”

Three rounds of:
Burpees
75 pound Power snatch
Box jump, 24″ box
75 pound Thruster
Chest to bar Pull-ups

“Hope” has the same format as Fight Gone Bad. In this workout you move from each of five stations after a minute. This is a five-minute round from which a one-minute break is allowed before repeating. The clock does not reset or stop between exercises. On call of “rotate,” the athlete/s must move to next station immediately for good score. One point is given for each rep.
