“In a wide variety of human activity, achievement is not possible without discomfort.”
― Alex Hutchinson, Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance
This idea of discomfort or struggles being the path we should chase can be a surprise or a very foreign idea for many of us, depending on how you were raised. I think a lot of times we are raised thinking, not sure where the idea comes from, that struggles and hard times and discomfort and BAD things. That we should do everything in our power to be COMFORTABLE because being UNCOMFORTABLE is BAD.
This kid on my shoulders turned 10 years old yesterday. My first born son! Something that my wife and really put a lot of effort into teaching him from a young age is that being UNCOMFORTABLE is an gift. Struggles and hard times are the only time we grow and improve. We want him to have an advantage in life as he grows up and becomes an adults. We want him to truly understand this concept.
2012 Reebok CrossFit Games – Carson, California at the Home Depot Center. My final workout as an Individual at the CrossFit Games.
“We all want to win. Every athlete wants to succeed. But the ones who do are those who separate wanting from being willing to make the sacrifice that winning demands.”
― Gary Mack, Mind Gym
This quote is so true. I run into people and work with people who want to win and want to succeed. The big difference between those who make it and those who do not is the willingness to make sacrifices.
Its as if you have to want it so bad that you almost NEED to win. I wonder if those who make the greatest sacrifices win the most? What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this quote and on your experiences with this idea of sacrificing to achieve your goals.
Throwing it back the Grid League Try-Out in Las Vegas. Recognize the current 3rd Fittest Man – Lukas Hogberg?
“Excellence can be achieved only today—not yesterday or tomorrow, because they do not exist in the present moment. Today is the only day you have to flex your talents and maximize your enjoyment. Your challenge is to win in all aspects of life. To reach that goal, you need to set yourself up for success by winning one day at a time. Procrastination is no match for a champion.”

“What if we stopped celebrating being busy as a measurement of importance? What if instead we celebrated how much time we had spent listening, pondering, meditating, and enjoying time with the most important people in our lives?”
― Greg McKeown, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less
Just over 1 year ago we got my son, Carson, a ukulele for his 9th Birthday and he has not put it down. He became obsessed and determined to learn every song he could. He turns 10 this month. Since last year he has moved on to the guitar and loves playing that more than the Uke. The ukulele was a way for him to learn to play successfully. It allowed him to stay excited because it is a much easier instrument to learn. I am excited to see where music takes him.
Here we are messing around and covering the song I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. We need to record some more songs. He has a really sweet sounding voice too but he’s not ready to share that.
